  • Rebates — Currently counsellors are not eligible to offer Medicare rebates for their clients, however we are lobbying to do so. The out of pocket expense to the client is around the same whether you see a counsellor or a psychologist. You may pay more to see a psychologist, but you will be able to receive a rebate which will leave you out of pocket for around the same expense as seeing a counsellor

  • You do not need to pay for a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP to see a counsellor. As such, your mental health consultations along with any relevant diagnoses do not go on your permanent medical record. Your GP is welcome however to write me a referral letter outlining what is going on for you currently

  • Despite the current limitations, there have been ongoing efforts by counselling associations and advocates to seek recognition and inclusion within Medicare. These efforts involve lobbying government bodies, promoting professional standards and accreditation frameworks for counsellors, and highlighting the unique contributions counsellors can make to mental health care. However, achieving recognition and access to rebates for counsellors requires navigating complex regulatory processes, addressing professional standards and scope of practice, and securing adequate funding allocations.
